Singer Shreya Ghoshal has clarified that while she is not embarrassed about singing Chikni Chameli, she has become more mindful about the kind of songs she chooses to record today. Speaking on a podcast with Raj Shamani, she shared that after the song’s success, she received several offers for tracks with overtly objectifying lyrics, which she declined.
Ghoshal explained that although Chikni Chameli was a high-energy, well-crafted number, she was younger at the time and did not always fully grasp the implications of certain lyrics. Over the years, her perspective has evolved, especially when she sees young children singing such songs without understanding their meaning.
Addressing criticism that she continues to perform the track at concerts despite saying she wouldn’t record similar songs now, Ghoshal said she does not disown it. “I’m not embarrassed. I sang that song at that time. It’s my song, and I’ve owned it. But I won’t record songs like that anymore,” she stated, adding that as an artist, she has to live with her past work even as her choices grow more conscious.
